The Reptile House
Hello, my name is Leo. I work at the City Zoo. I love my job because I have got many strange animals to look after.
I look after the reptiles. Reptiles are cold-blooded animals. They have got dry skin. Some have got scales, like snakes and crocodiles. Others have got hard shells, like tortoises.
What can reptiles do? Most reptiles can walk or swim. Snakes can't walk because they haven't got any legs! But they can slide very fast. Turtles can swim well, but they can't run. They are very slow on land.
My friend Mia looks after the birds. Birds have got feathers and wings. They can fly high in the sky. Mia has got a parrot. The parrot can talk! It says, "Hello! Hello!"

The Reptile House (PET Level)
Hello, my name is Leo. I am a zookeeper at the City Zoo, and I absolutely love my job. I am responsible for looking after the reptiles, which are some of the most fascinating creatures in the park.
Reptiles are ectothermic, meaning they rely on external sources like the sun to regulate their body temperature. Unlike mammals, they have got dry skin covered in scales. These scales act as a suit of armour, protecting them from predators. For example, crocodiles have got incredibly tough skin, while tortoises have got hard shells to shield themselves.
Many people ask me, "What can reptiles actually do?" Well, it depends on the species. Snakes cannot walk because they have not got any limbs. However, they can slide across the ground at surprising speeds. On the other hand, turtles are excellent swimmers, but they are so slow on land that they can hardly escape if a predator approaches.
My colleague, Mia, looks after the endothermic animals, specifically birds. Birds have got feathers and wings, which allow them to fly high into the sky. Interestingly, birds are actually descendants of ancient reptiles! Mia has got a parrot that can mimic human speech. It is incredible to think that an animal can communicate with us, even without understanding the meaning of the words.
